Another step forward

Another step forward

On schedule to open in 2010, the Museum of Liverpool is approaching external completion, with only the wing roofs, corner trims and window surrounds remaining to be clad with Jura Limestone towards the end of May.

The paving for the terraces and concrete steps at the east and west-ends is due on site shortly to be completed by June.

Internally, the museum is taking shape, with plastering work to the walls, balconies and main central staircase well underway. Installation of the suspended ceilings has now begun, and the internal gallery fit-out will start soon.

Find out about the museum’s construction on the Building page.

Liverpool Map

Liverpool Map

International glasswork artists Inge Panneels and Jeffrey Sarmiento have been commissioned to create the 3D monolith Liverpool Map for the museum – to highlight Liverpool’s local, national and global significance.

The map features many layers of sheet glass fused together using pioneering techniques. Each layer will be printed with different imagery and designs, depicting Liverpool as a city defined by culture and heritage rather than geographical lines.

One layer will display the public’s handwritten contributions of their favourite places in or associated with Liverpool. These were recently collected during sessions held at Merseyside Maritime Museum and BBC Radio Merseyside, and demonstrated the affection people feel for Bold Street, Greenbank Park and the Vauxhall Canal!

You can now follow the Museum of Liverpool on Twitter. The regular updates - or ‘tweets’ to use the correct terminology - come direct from the source, keeping you informed of the construction process and the day-to-day goings on behind the scenes.

The museum also has its own Flickr following, where you can see the building evolving with every photo added on National Museums Liverpool’s own photo stream, or a public group which includes images added by anyone inspired to photograph the museum!

Liverpool's new logo

Liverpool's new logo

As a lasting legacy of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the Museum of Liverpool now features in the new ‘Liverpool Brand’. The logo displays Liverpool’s famous waterfront skyline, which has become familiar all around the world. Seen alongside the Three Graces and the Echo Arena, the Museum of Liverpool has already made its mark as part of the face of Liverpool, before it has even opened!

Chinese family tree

Chinese family tree

We are currently looking to work with people of Chinese heritage to trace their family trees for a display in the China, Shanghai and Liverpool exhibition in the Global City gallery due to open in 2011.

We will work with 12 members of the public, to help them research their Chinese heritage. The results will be displayed on National Museums Liverpool’s website, with the family histories of six of the participants going on public display in the exhibition.

Find out how you can get involved on the Global City webpage.

Early years

Early years

We are currently working with our early years stakeholder group to develop exhibition content, pilot sessions and develop our learning programme to support the Little Liverpool gallery and wider early years offer across the new galleries for young children.

A group of three to four year olds and teachers from Newton le Willows Children’s Centre recently visited The Beat Goes On and Only a Game? exhibitions at World Museum Liverpool as part of the pilot scheme for Museum of Liverpool learning sessions. They gave feedback on the displays and took part in activities demonstrating their knowledge of a museum’s work.

The early years stakeholder group has also picked out their ‘Top Ten Needs’ for museum visits, which include child-friendly staff, baby changing facilities, and lockers and buggy spaces. Visit our community engagement webpage for more information.
